Beatty's Chocolate Cake: A Timeless Classic for Chocolate Lovers
There are chocolate cakes, and then there's Beatty's Chocolate Cake. This recipe, famously known for its rich, moist texture and intense chocolate flavor, has won the hearts of many dessert enthusiasts around the world. Named after the renowned cookbook author and chef Ina Garten (whose nickname is Beatty), this cake is a testament to the simple joys of homemade baking. Today, I'm thrilled to share with you the recipe for Beatty's Chocolate Cake, so you too can experience the decadent delight it brings.
Ingredients:
For the Chocolate Cake:
- 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs, at room temperature
- 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup freshly brewed hot coffee
For the Chocolate Frosting:
- 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
- ½ pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 1 large egg yolk, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1¼ cups sifted powdered sugar
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter and flour two 8-inch round cake pans, tapping out any excess flour.
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
In another bowl, combine the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed until well combined.
With the mixer on low speed, slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing just until incorporated.
Gradually add the hot coffee to the batter, mixing until smooth. The batter will be thin, but that's perfectly normal.
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.
Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 30 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
While the cakes are cooling, prepare the chocolate frosting. Melt the chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pot of simmering water, stirring occasionally until smooth. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
In a separate bowl, beat the butter on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
Add the melted chocolate, egg yolk, and vanilla extract to the butter, and beat until well combined.
Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating on low speed until smooth and creamy.
Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread a generous layer of frosting on top of one cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
Slice, serve, and indulge in the heavenly delight of Beatty's Chocolate Cake!
Conclusion: Beatty's Chocolate Cake is more than just a dessert—it's a celebration of the pure bliss that comes from savoring a slice of perfectly crafted chocolate goodness. Whether you're marking a special occasion or simply craving a sweet treat, this cake never fails to impress. So gather your ingredients, preheat your oven, and let the aroma of chocolate fill your kitchen as you embark on the journey to create a masterpiece that will be cherished by all who taste it.
