Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups (300g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons (15g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup (240ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • Cream cheese frosting (see recipe below)

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 8 ounces (226g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups (480g) powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prepare:

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Grease and flour two 9-inch (23cm) round cake pans, or line them with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients:

    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder until well combined.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients:

    • In a separate large bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar until smooth.
